Volume 19
Mission 1: Shiouji considers possible problems with Nishiki(aka Secondchan and Roppon II), believing that it is possible his mother, Miwa, is stalling him for mysterious reasons.

Elsewhere Kabapu speaks about having political power but Il Palazzo has the economic/finanacial power.

As for poor Elgala, whose been dmeoted and knows the President isn't the real Excel, she's beocme wanted for questioning and Il tells her to go into hiding.

Mission 2: Excel/Teriha has a bad headache and goes to the hospital. Runs into that crazy doctor and his nurse. Umi asks the nurse if she recognized Teriha and she tells Umi that she's met someone similar looking in the past. Yeah... Excel and Hyatt has hit this hospital several times before.

Kabapu admits to harrasment which is why Elgala is in the run. Abuse of political power? Of course. An Elgala is not liking her situation.

Mission 3: "I am a dog. I am experienced."-Mince

Hyatt is having an issue(in a pool of her own blood) so Mince goes to find the other girl, Elgala. On her trek she encounters Iwata, kids, Umi and Teriha. Of course, the site of her original captor sends her running. Eventually she does find Elgala-er, Elgala finds her while fishing in the river.

Elgala wishes the real Excel was there, hiding out isntead of her because survivals is what she was good at. So she decides to look for her.

Mission 4:Diary of Teriha. Her feelings about the Shiouji family. Her life at the lab. her thoughts on the future and her memory loss.

Plus more fun with Elgala and Mince.

Mission 5: Sumiyoshi gets a car. Iwata gets a bicycle. Iwata helps a fleeing Elgala. But the two crash big time with Iwata going through the windsheild of Sumiyoshis new car. As for Elgala, before landing in the river(or channel) she soars through the air.

"It's true what they say... Just before you die, you always hurtle through the air like a tomahawk missile."-Elgala

Oh, and she spots Teriha/Excel.

Mission 6: Bomb threat at Ill HQ. Who did it?

Kabapu: I did set a bomb there, but...
Matsuya: You mean that you have a bomb set in the building but this particular bomb was set by someone else?

The team is sent out to ILL HQ to... help? Yep. Thats right. Teriha races there because of her feelins for the "mysterious" Il Palazzo. Even as an amnesiac Excel is loyal.

Oh, Elgala and Mince are on her trail.

Volume 18
Mission 1: Kabapu plots violent strategy against Il Palazzo with his subordinates. Sumiyoshi is the only one with a shred of human compassion now that Watanabe has become a damaged individual since volume 15 when the once amnesiac Hyatt left him. As they plot they learn Il Palazzo is running for Mayor so Kabapu decides to run against him.

Excel/Teriha goes to one of his rallies overwhelmed with a feeling she can't describe. As she calms herself in an alley she overhears two people(Watanabe and Sumiyoshi) plotting Il's demise.

Mission 2: Excel/Teriha wants to help Il and needs weapons. She goes to Umi and Umi's not sure she understands Teriha. She traps Teriha within the lab so she won't do anything irrational.

That attack? The attempted "car accident" failed. With explosive results. Back at Kabapu HQ.
Matsuya: You don't look like you're doing much campaigning. How can you say you're going to win honestly?
Kabapu: We honestly have a great deal of cash! Money to spread rumors! Money for attack ads! Money to bribe elected officials!

Yeah... Kabapu wins despite being an exposed, corrupted man. Sumiyoshi... he just can't adapt to all this. Oh, and it was Egala who got hurt in the "car accident."

Mission 3: Dreams and memories collide as a hospitalized Egala realizes that president Excel is an impostor! Took a while.

Mission 4: Egala confides in Hyatt whose skeptical of the notion that their President is a fake. She informs Il of her suspicions and gets a job demotion.

Egala asks Hyatt: Don't you even care what happened to the real Excel?

Mission 5: After a night of drinking and eating, what later is revealed to be spoiled meat, Sumiyoshi and Watanabe have to cancel plans with Matsuya. So Iwata asks her to a movie.

Little talk of Ill Corp., Kabapu and the such. Iwata thinks they're on a date. The two run into Umi and Teriha. Matsuya believes she's seen Teriha before. Iwata, being a cyborg/android, collapses because he didn't get back to the lab to recharge. Now he has to be retrieved. Turns out he ignored all the warnings because he wanted to hang out with Matsuya.

Mission 6: Shiouji family(that includes Teriha) go to a hot spring. Putting him out of contact with Sumiyoshi because he needs help. It seems a confused Ropponmatsu II(or Nishiki) is at his home. especially after she collapses and he tries recharging her only for her to download his dating sim games into her memory. Awkward!

Some funny scenes with Iwata, Watanabe, and Matsuya.

Mission 7: Shiouji family is still at the springs. The situation with Sumi and Nishiki worsens. Matsuya and Iwata try to help to hilarious results.

Volume 17
Mission 1: Kabapu continues to wither away as more legal troubles mount. In the opening he is actually taken away to be interrogated.

Kabapu: I haven’t done anything…
Cop: That’s what they all say… Even those latter proved innocent.

Il Palazzo and his subordinates are in firm control of the city with government officials taking their directions from Il. President Excel seems to be a target for gangs as Teriha(aka the Real Excel) gets abducted while on an outing with Umi. Shiouji sends in a new, inferior model, of Ropponmatsu II called Nishiki to save her. Teriha collapses from a fever after the rescue while struggling with flashbacks of her previous life that occurred during the experience.

It should be noted that Prof. Shiouji is against Teriha leaving the home and makes up a reason to Umi on why(his fake theory in mission 2 of the same volume) as he’s under directions from his mother, Miwa, to watch her.

Mission 2: Excel/Teriha wants to work though Umi is concerned for her safety. Shiouji not as much anymore. Umi does get Teirha a job at a maid café she was formerly employed at. Soon however its bought by the Ill Corp. until Teriha yells at Egala and Hyatt to not destroy the building and leave it alone. Stunned Hyatt and Egala agree believing this to be their senior(half-right) and assuming this café is how she “unwinds” from work. Teirha runs off exhausted after this experience and gets a few more flashes of her past life.

Later, after Teriha pays rent, Miwa shows her son Teirha giving Umi birthday gifts . Miwa states that Umi will be sadden if Teriha leaves.

Mission 3: Iwata gets injured on the job(window cleaning on a skyscraper). So being an android its up to Shiouji to repair him but the problem is the Department of Environmental Security hasn’t the funds to pay for it. Matsuya asks of Shiouji and promises they’ll pay him back.

Egala celebrates money with Hyatt. Teriha asks about Shiouji’s profession and Umi lies to her. The two then talk of Teriha’s memories.

Iwata, back on the job, is looking to sell some junk to pay off his debt. Digging through boxes of storage sent over from when they got kicked out of their offices and homes he finds a black bricks. Turns out its gold. This was the gold that Egala got way back in volume 11. Watanabe tries taking it by force once its revealed this was found after a fire in Hyatts apartment and since Watanabe went into debt trying to help her financially he believes he is entitled to it(also volume 11). Momochi takes it while Watanabe beats up on Iwata.

The volume ends with Teriha seeing a picture of President Excel in a magazine and having more flashback dreams.

Mission 4: Teriha is haunted by more past memories that she can’t really decipher. Back at the Departments current offices the gold bar has made Kabapu more cheery. The group is supplied with new equipment and even give back to the community! This, of course, is just a front because at a celebration Kabapu sets of several explosions at Ill Corp. buildings. Turns out the gold bar allowed Momochi to gain access to funds she hidden for Kabapu. Shiuji reappears and gives them brand new power suits. Kabapu is now aiming to conquer the city.

Mission 5: Across/Ill Corp. talk about bombings. Il Palazzo seems amused by the statutes that were delivered as gifts were really bombs.

Kapabu and his staff have to break into his old base. Mainly Iwata and Watanbe. However Iwata, like the idiot he is, makes a mistake that looked to cause a huge explosion. Shiouji races to help with his computer hacking skills but he can’t crack through. Until the last moment where a lipstick adorning pop-up screen says all is safe. (I’m assuming this is Miwa Shiouji’s doing).

Back at the Shiouji’s home everyone’s gathered. Miwa asks Teirha that remembering her past may not be a good thing. Kabapu and his staff start the clean up of the base.

Note from the oubliette in the back of note, Excel/Teriha probably had a life before she joined up with Across too.

Here's a link to review giving it 2½ stars out of 5. I disagree, of course, but the reviewer seems to generally enjoy the series and just didn't care for this volume. And the viewers does recommend picking up the series from the start.

Double Edit: Translated the website for Japan's Young King Ours magazine and figured out that volume 19 of Excel Saga(Excelling [heart] Sir Moth as it's listed) should be out Feb. 8th. Still, that demands that volume 18 probably won't be out until, at it's earliest, December. Damn...

Volume 16
Mission 1: Kabapu enacts plans to take down the Ill corp. He sets up his own electronics store to try and undercut Il Palazzo’s store. Kabapu also sets up his subordinates for job interviews to get placed in as spies but they sabotage his efforts by purposely failing the interviews. President Excel shows little concerned about the new store competition. Well, “Excel” as we find out the body Umi found at the end of volume 15 is Excel. How do we know she’s real? How about her tattered prison clothes from early last volume.Umi hides her in her room at Shiouji’s lab/home. Excel is suffering from amnesia and Umi has given her some of her cosplay clothes to wear for the time being. All the while Shiouji is desperately looking for the missing Ropponmatsu unit and Kabapu loses his bid to rebuild the reclaimed island(which, form my understanding, is somewhere near Kobe, Japan.)

Mission 2: Prof. Shiouji is suspicious of Umi after an incident in the last chapter where he, without his glasses, thought he may have seen someone else on the premises. He discovers there has been a visitor living in the lab/home for the past week. So he confronts her, accidentally walking into her room as she’s changing. Several hours earlier Kabapu watches as his empire slowly crumbles and decides he must find Shiouji Tenmangu, Prof. Shiouji’s father, to find the missing Ropponmatsu unit. Momochi brings his attention to a DVD where Shiouji Miwa teases that she’s found her missing husband. The real Excel is scared after drawing a picture of Il Palazzo and then seeing him on TV, throwing her into a state of confusion where she trashes Umi’s room and runs off. There’s a moment where’s she’s hiding under a familiar bridge as Hyatt and Egala pass by and reminisce(vol. 8, mission 7) on it. Umi, after searching for her, finds excel laid out on the steps of her aunt and cousins lab/home. Fast forward to present where Miwa, Prof., Umi and Excel are all present. Miwa decides to let Excel stay and gives the amnesiac Excel the new name of Teriha. All to the Professors disliking.

Mission 3: The City Environmental Security Agency has deep troubles. Kabapu has been exposed by the media as people question the loss of millions and attribute it to Kabapu’s mysterious dealings. Now him and his subordinates work out of a flimsy cabin with Momochi giving most the directions as they crew of Iwata, Watanabe, Sumiyoshi and Matsuya do mostly odd jobs around the city like simple clean up and maintenance. This leaves the crew mostly out of house and home with Sumiyoshi considering leaving but his friends wanting to at least stay for the time being out of loyalty.

Il Palazzo has bought Kabapu’s old building with plans on demolishing it. The news reaches Kabapu and makes him feel worse. Miwa talks her son into taking a teaching position to earn the household some money because Kabapau can no longer finance him.

Mission 4: The Environmental Security department repair their current HQ/shed and go out for a bite at an Okonomiya place where Mrs. Manager is currently filling in. President Excel announces to Hyatt and Egala she will no longer do press as Lord Il Palazzo will be making more public appearances and speeches.

Mission 5: Kabapu reminisces about the good times. Including how he meet a talented scientist named Shiouji Tenmangu and his fiancé Miwa. Also looking back on how Miwa changed in attitude after Tenmangu left and how Ropponmatsu was relatively unfinished.

Meanwhile! Teriha(you know, Excel…) joins Umi at a certain convention where Umi’s seniors dress her up to match Umi’s cosplay outfit.

KA-WA-II(x3)!!!

Teriha discards the outfit as it’s “not her colors.” Teriha helps Umi sell merchandise(doujinshi) at the festival. Teirha starts getting hit with some memories all related to that long blond hair man. Back to Kabapu who was wandering around and got hit by a bus. Poor guy.

Mission 6: It’s New Years Eve!!! Watanabe, Iwata, Sumiyoshi, and Matsuya visit a temple here Iwata accidentally breaks their temple bell. Did you forget his a cyborg now?

What would Buddha do?
Kill him! Torture him!
In a nonviolent fashion, of course!

The Across girls get trapped in an elevator when the city suffers a black out. “Excel” collapses and Egala notices how heavy Excel feels. Allt he while Umi and Teirha make their New Years wishes, Shiouji upset as he planned on testing his new machine. Soon excel pops up and gets the girls out of an elevator. The Department celebrate New Years together in the shed at the end all while Miwa watches from Kabapu’s old sci-fi HQ all the details from Excel and her girls to the department and it’s obvious she knows something’s up.

Volume 17 to be released 3/11/08. Wow... thats about 6 months after the last volume versus the little over 9 month wait for volume 16 I suffered. Volume 18 is out in Japan and unless volume 19 drops before volume 17 hits here I predict a long wait for volume 18 for us. Grrrrr.

Edit: Look up "excel saga manga volume 19" in Google search engine and you get the paragraph above on the second page.

Damn...

Introduction & Part 1

Part 5
Part 6
Excel Saga Wikipedia

Well, apparently volume 16(the summary I read spoiled a major surprise. But brings up more possibilities for this series to continue far longer than I thought it could. Of course it’s simple scenario seemed like a 5 book deal tops) comes out in September and I had the basic breakdowns for volume 14-15 done sense, well, since around the same time as my last update. Maybe I’ll just do volume 14... Nah… volume 15 too.

Anyway, as you can tell things have heated up a bit in the past volumes with Egalas introduction, the group relocating homes, and efforts by both the department and Across. Volume 14 is definitely where the **** hit’s the fan. But volume 15 brings a surprising new direction. Almost a new beginning. Well, **** hit’s the fan a few chapters into volume 15 but the lead up is brilliant.

Volume 14
Mission 1: Feeling disappointed in the aftermath of the failed abduction of Ropponmatsu I Excel leads Egala and Hyartt to a store for some supplies. Egala continues her complaining about buying bulk.

“Big box retailers in our neighborhood crushing traditional society through globalization! I like it!”-Excel

Egala causes Excel to lose her 100 yen coin and leads to a fight in a channel ditch between the two. Suniyoshi sees this on his way to work and relates it to his co-worker. Egala and Excel, as well as Hyatt, return. Egala and excel are looking to clean themselves off by the hot waters off. Hyatt has one of her deaths due to a methane leak. This cause their apartment to blow up. The three flee to a park where Excel tries toe xplain how they can clean themselves off with the public drinking fountain. Egala starts crying and they attract a crowd, including Ropponmatsu II. Since I and II are essentially the same robot with different bodies and personalities Roppon II recognizes the two.

Mission 2: Excel, concerned with the onlookers, says they can go to a bath house. Miwa Shiouji has Roppon II follow the girls. Prof. Shiouji finds out, after Miwa disappears(which begs to ask more questions about what Miwa’s personal plans are), and also recognizes the girls. Contacts Matsuya on an encrypted line and gives her a heads up about how Kabapu will no doubt employ the team to follow this up. Once there Matsuya and Roppon II go in first, much to the dismay of Iwata. Shiouji, working his own angle, puts the surveillance on 5 minute delay. He’s watching and altering some data.

Inside Excel is annoyed about how Egala wants to lounge all day inside. Until Excel spots the Daitenzin. She tries readying the others and soon finds herself sharing a brief conversation with Matsuya behind a door. Matsuya trying to gather more information about Across and Il palazzo as well as see if they know anything about Kabapu and Tenmangu Shiouji(Prof.s father if you’re just paying attention). Iwata however interrupts this talks by breaking down a wall. In the confusion the Across team splits up and runs. Excel and Egala pretty much naked fleeing while Watanabe encounters Hyatt, who he knows as Mrs. Ayasugi, and finding out she works for the enemy. He is ordered to arrest her.

Mission 3: Explosion at the bath house thanks to the elderly woman who works there lighting up while gas pipes were broken. Watanabe awakens and remembers what happed in the last few days as he is now living with Ayasugi/Hyatt. Nabe is her care taker as Ayasugi seemed to suffer severe amnesia. Nabe deals with personal questions at work while trying to work through his shyness regarding his feelings for her. Dr. Kabapu and his secretary Momochi discuss her amnesia and how Watanabe was the only non Across member to have regular contact with Ayasugi which is why she could only remember him during hypnotic interrogation. Nabe wants to resign and marry her but Kabapu isn’t going to allow that.

Mission 4: Iwata and Roppononmatsu II are fighting and we get a flashback about how they were chasing Excel and Egala a few days back during the situation at the bath house. They lost the two after Ropponmatsu II crashed into a wall. Excel and Egala are able to acquire clothes however are once again spotted by their pursuers. They escape due to Roppon II and Iwata’s constant fighting. Which of course leads to needless destruction of their immediate surroundings. Especially how he throws Roppon II as a missile in one scene. Her revenege involved pointing Iwata in their direction which was really setting him up to get hit by a subway train. Back to present and Nabe goes home happy and the physical violence between Roppon II and Iwata ends with him pinned under concrete. Luckily he’s a cyborg(sort of). Oh, and for you menchi fans, he escaped the blast and is found on the street by Excel and Egala in this story.

Mission 5: There’s a murder mystery at the hot springs lodge that Kabapu is staying at. No major plot points. The important aspects deal with excel and Egala returning to their a place of work by the beach from Vol. 12 Mission 1. They get adrift trying to fish and get picked up by Mrs. Manager and Mr. Owner in a battle ship. Mrs. Manager managed that noodle diner from Vol. 12 which is when she was last seen. Mr. Owner was last seen alongside Mrs. Manager back when Egala debut in volume 7.

Mission 6: Excel and Egala is awaken by battleships firing. Owner was doing some heavy fishing and speaks about how he planned to turn the battleship into a luxury liner. Egala and excel discover there’s a large crew on the ship that’s essentially un powered and floating right now. Kabapu is alerted to this ship but passes it along to someone else to handle. A sub attacks the ship after Owner fires on it thinking it was a whale. Owner goes down with the ship as the crew and Mrs. Manager escapes. The sub is not Japanese and Excel and Egala are captured by the Maritime Safety Agency.

Volume 15
Mission 1: Hard working Watanabe is trying to prepare a future for him and Ayasugi. Earning extra money, learning how to be a proper man, and finally popping the question. As they are starting to become intimate, with Kabapu and Momochi doing “surveillance”, Il Palazzo comes to retrieve Hyatt. Hyatts memories return and she not only leaves with him but stops Watanabe from attacking him. He is instantly crushed. Kabapu orders his men to follow as Iwata finds the worst possible time to show up and gets beat upside the head by Watanabe with a bat sending him face first into the ground in front of Matsuya and Sumiyoshi.

Mission 2: Kapabu’s men follow Il and Hyatt and occasionally confiscating things he touches or looks at it. Il and Hyatt appear to be on their way to the base. Small bits in the taxi and bus. They even stop for food. Kabapu leaves command center when he realizes they are close by. He sees the two in an alley teleporting.

“Long time no see… Zeex.”-Il Palazzo.

Excel and Egala are in prison, sharing a cell, and Excel comments: Free room and board. For those how had to struggle for these things, prison is not without it’s advantages.”

Mission 3: Excel and Egala are being moved to another prison. They try making an escape which involves fighting the jailers. They end up in sea and have to deal with the sharks. The captain of the ship says they’ll just write it off as being shot trying to escape. The two meet a fake priest on an abandoned island. Another man who was prison bound but escaped. He wants them to help him serve the lord but they don’t want to. Il Palazzo comes to retrieve the two but somehow excel gets left behind.

Mission 4: Prof. Shiouji is making amends to Ropponmatsu I per Kabapu’s requests. Momochi informs Kabapu that stocks are on the rise and several construction projects are underway in the city. Sumiyoshi talks about a new electronics store. Watanabe returns to work, this is about a few days or a few weeks later, in a happy mood. Excel is still on the island trying to fend off the evil priest. Oh, and Ropponmatsu I has disappeared.

Mission 5: Months past and Matsuya watches as her co-workers are getting into a new cheap electronics store. Apparently great items that are company brand and with great service. Not only Sumiyoshi but Iwata and Watanabe have been purchasing things there. Nabe indulging on the more hentai related stuff. The brand is ILL. Momochi and Kabapu talk. It’s been 112 days since Roppon I went missing. Prof. Miwa, Shiouji’s mother, is missing. Also a bid to update the city’s information system had been put in and finished ahead of schedule with 70% below budget. Shock to Kabapu. Momochi granted the bid but checked the schematics with Shiouji who said they were indeed good. She mentions that the company that sells her ILL brand laptop did the job. Matsuya checks out the store, after the game she was lent by Sumi who bought it from the store, and is shocked that it’s everything she’s heard. Buying more then expected. She tries going in a pseudo disguise but is recognized by her co-workers.

Egala and Hyatt are living the high life in a plus luxury apartment. With a fat menchi enjoying life. They enter a building and meet up with president Excel!

Mission 6: excel briefs her employees(thats Egala and Hyatt) on one of Il Palazzos plans. It seems Il is playing economics for his world domination goals and its starting to work. Excel is no longer the hyperactive, paranoid, prone to lack-of-confidence, and some times worrisome woman she once was. She is now a well spoken woman of class. Excel operates as second to command to Il Palazzo. Egala and Hyatt are the leg women. They do opts spying on the mayor and city council to dig up dirt. The city is indeed corrupt. Kabapu however is worried. His companies bid on a construction project fell through and his stocks aren’t doing that wel. He finds that the mayor he helped put in office is being accused of embezzlement. At an awards ceremony he meets ILL Corporations head honcho Il palazzo. Kabapu is stunned and the two trade inside jabs. One in which Il asks if he lost his dolls(reference to Ropponmatsu).

Ends with Umi finding a body in the rain. (this is where the next volume spoiled me. Oh well… December to September wait was killing me. I needed info!)

Finding pix of Shioji is tough so this might be the last of them.

Also, a lot of information is explained within these two chapters.

Volume 12
Side Story: A companion piece featuring a spotlight on Professor Gojyou Shiouji and his cousin Umi Rengaya. Opens with a bit of history on Shiouji. He is the son of a scientist and biologist. His father, Tenmangu Shiouji, left him and his mother Miwa when Gojyou was only 6. Afterwards his mother started to become more and more physically affectionate to her son which warped him. After his first meeting with his younger cousin Umi, he initially decided to dedicate himself to her life but that changed as she got older. Umi now dedicates her life to comfort her cousin whose consumed with his own work as she assists him as an intern and his families lab. Coincidentally located near a children’s park.

The several short stories are supplementary and don’t have any real bearing on continuity but show why Dr, Kabapu couldn’t get in contact with him in earlier stories as well as what delayed Iwatas return as a cyborg. The stories really focus on him enjoying sitting at the bench by the park while his some what air headed cousin, Umi, who dresses in various cosplay style outfits tries to get him to answer the phone or try some food she made. There’s also a man named Heisuke Matsunobu whose presence is just for extra comedy effect.

Mission 1: Kabapu and Momochi discuss the bombings that occurred in volume 11 mission 8. Various contractors and owners who were to start demolition but were slow to start the renewal are outraged. Though now, with the demolition out of the way, construction on various projects on those sites is moving quickly. Kabapu admits to having considered destroying the sights himself. After Momochi leaves Kabapu starts to believe himself and Il Palazzo are on the same wavelength.

Our Across girls get a job at a diner on the beach run by Mrs. Manager from Mission 6 of volume 7. Hyatt has one of her collapses and is left in the shade by Excel and Egala. Later that night Excel, Egala and Manager are firing off bottle rockets. Egala accidentally blows up a near by facility. The facility was owned by Kabapu who, once hearing about the destruction, orders for the debris to be cleared away. Hyatt seems to have been barely alive through the night and still out when Excel and Egala find out hey forgot about her.

Mission 2: The department(and Ropponmatsu II/Second-Chan) go to the beach. They were suppose to train at the special facility but as you know from the last story it got blown up real good. Now they’re just on vacation. Watanabe goes out looking for shade but finds Hyatt/Mrs. Ayasugi. He takes her for a boat ride while Iwata decides to try and chase them down and ruin things for Watanabe. With Second-Chan chasing right behind him. “Love is more amusing and passionate when obstacles are placed in its way”-Iwata. Nabe and Ayasugi get out to sea but lose the oars in a tidal wave caused by Iwata(and his cyborg body). Hyatt tries to explain she has a brick of gold to repay her and her roommates debt to him while Nabe tries to express his love for her. At that optimal moment she collapses again. Nabe needs to do CPR but perverted images float through his mind.

Mission 3: Shiouji remembers back to when he first met his cousin, Umi. His daydreams are interrupted by Umi whose older and specifically more grown up. She hands him a telephone with Kabapu whose asking if he had spoken with his father or if his mother, Miwa, has spoken to his father. Shiouji has not on both counts and talks with Umi about his fathers disappearance and his mothers change in personality afterwards. At his office Kabapu and Momochi discuss Miwa while Shiouji prepares to make a trip to the beach to retrieve Iwatas body from underwater.

Mission 4: As Watanabe is finally going to give Ayasugi CPR they are met by a ship. Once their helped on board they’re held hostage by modern day pirates. Ayasugi awakens, confused, as is Watanabe on how she revived herself. The ship however gets knocked for a loop by a submarine. This sends both Watanabe and Ayasugi into the sea. The sub is manned by Shiouji who sends Second-Chan to rescue Nabe while Ayasugi, unbeknownst to Shiouji and Second Chan, floats away. Iwata ends up washing ashore, as does Hyatt who just returns to work though covered in seaweed. Nabe’s in the hospital worried and second Chan admits to Matsuya she doesn’t know if Ayasugi was with him or not.

Mission 5: Hyatt gets cleaned up as Excel and Egala end up arguing on how “fine” Hyatt is. Egala is worried she was sexually assaulted because of how she returned. Though Excel thinks she’s just being Hyatt at her most casual. The girls get paid and Mrs. Manager speaks about how the hotel(way back in her first appearance) will rise again. The girls return home to find Mince almost starved to death in their home.

Kabapu contemplates the bombings still. “Yes, I do sense his hand in this. I’m certain he ahs resurfaced. And things that I feared might happen someday are already happening.”In his head he goes over not being fully prepared for attacks on this level. About not being ready with the technology and robotics that his staff is employing as they are not yet perfect. He wonders about Shiouji’s father because his disappearance delayed his plans and how he refuses to contact Miwa. Kabapu and Matsuya visit the staff(minus Nabe in the hospital) and after speaking with Iwata Kabapu in his head determines he needs Tenmangu.

Matsuya and Sumiyoshi run into Hyatt/Ayasugi and ask her to accompany them to visit Watanabe. She explains how she survived to him even though Sumi and Matsuya think she’s just humoring him. Il is not at HQ, instead he’s in a mysterious location plotting.

Volume 13
Mission 1: Miwa Shiouji returns to the shock of her son by infiltrating and disarming the security system which includes second Chan. She showers her son with physical embrace as she does with Umi and Second Chan. Seems she rewrote Second-Chans command priorities. They discuss the fact Kabapu is looking for Tenmangu Shiouji briefly before Miwa up and leaves to her personal lab. Umi and Shiouji discuss the fact they’ve never been in her lab as its been locked and couldn’t figure how to get in, including sending Ropponmatsu to try and break in. After Umi tries using “open sesame” Shiouji tries a spoken password(whispered) which lets them in. they look around and find old pictures of Miwa from years back. Miwa more or less looks only several years older then any of the other women running around in this series.

The Across girls are waiting around for Il Palazzo to return. Spending time saluting a cardboard cut out Egala made.

Mission 2: The women of Across bum rush a news team and get spotted by a producer as they promote the word of Il Palazzo. Thinking they’re wannabe idols. They do some public speaking about Il Palazzo and Across while Kabapu meets with Miwa to talk about Tenamnagu and finding a “ruin.” A hologram of Il Palazzo looms over the city for thousands to see and hear. The girls rush to HQ as Kabapu watches and wanders about Il’s goals.

Mission 3: The staff(Matsuya, Iwata, Watanabe, and Sumiyoshi) see the hologram as do many on the street and ones at home watching the news before its cut off by the government. The staff is assembled in their battle suits to see Kabapu in his native dress. To the shock, dismay, and embarrassment of his employees. Kabapu explains who Il Palazzo is.

He is the mastermind of the organization we regard as our enemy.-Kabapu
When you say “we” do you mean “you and Mrs. Momochi?”-Matsuya
Surely you did not mean us, dokta.-Sumiyoshi
It is an established fact you are included in the we.-Kabapu.
“Established fact“?-Watanabe

Kabapu explains why the Department of Environmental Safety was invented. To stop Il and destroy the over technology that could destroy the world. Matsuya wants to quit but Kabapu makes it clear she knows too much and she would have to live under strict protection. Also admits to hiring the four cause they lived in the same apartment complex, past applicants died in hiring process.

Kabapu is from Solaria. An advanced civilization that existed 20,000 years in the past. Solaria vanished with few survivors and remains. “I have made it my task to seek out these scattered devices, and destroy them.” Kabapu explains he lays dormant from time to time until he senses a danger. He feels Il Palazzo possesses the source of Soalrias destruction. The staff, needless to say, think they deserve a raise. And get two weeks leave.

Mission 4: The trio are sent to the enemies “stronghold” to abduct Ropponmatsu I. Undercover are the group as Excel and Hyatt work as janitors and Egala as an office worker. When the trio run into Ropponmatsu they try different ways of capturing the robot. Excel tries tying her up at first to no avail but Egala shocks her down. Kabapu finds out her system went off line and once abck she’ll go into a violent self-preservation mode. He calls in SWAT while Egala and Excel, unaware she’s a robot(though Excel had ran into her once before and had to carry her back in vol. 6 and missions 6-7. Once Ropponmatsu awakens she destroys Egalas stun gun and chases the two but slips on the floors Hyatt heavily waxed and falls out the window. which is many floors up. The Across women escape to report to Il Palazzo and Ropponmatsu survives. Matsuya meanwhile was detained trying to flee the country.

Mission 5: Kabapu and Miwa Shiouji meet and talk by an indoor pool. Kabapu mentions the attempt at abducting Ropponmatsu I. How he needs her to be perfect for his ultimate goal. Miwa speaks on her son finish the culmination of her husbands work which is Ropponmatsu. She is to reach and open the gate of the Ruin and confront what is inside. He talks about Ropponmatsus core being the ruler of Solaria. How he hid “her majesty” inside the core. He continues on about destroying the ruin and mentions having used “dead men souls” to accomplish some of his goals. Miwa asks why he never sued his resources to just conquer the world but he is against that idea.

Prof. Shiouji and his assistant/cousin Umi enter Miwas lab. Shiouji uses her computer to look for information on his father. He finds notes left by his dad, tenmangu Shiouji, about the birth of his son Gojyou Shiouji and the development of Ropponmatsu I. It leads into information on the Ruin, Solaria, ancient science and technology, and wanderings about Kabapu. He discovers his father was years ahead of where he is now and that his mother can exchange information with his father. The files, though, were left on the computer by his mother for him to find.

Mission 6: Matsuya approaches Shiouji outside his lab with questions regarding many things that have been happening of late. They talk about Kabapu but all Shiouji knows about him is that he financed his fathers research twenty years ago. Matsuya comments on Kabapu having the police and government in his pocket. They discuss Ropponmatsu and the holograms. Shiouji tells Matsuya that the power source for the Ropponmatsu units was provided by Kabapu and believes it was his fathers invention. Matsuya asks about their battle suits. Shiouji answers that they were tailored after Kabapus instructions. Lightweight, enhances strength, good in hot and cold environments. The material that was used to make them was fabric that was provided by Kabapu and was also used in the development of the Ropponmatsu units. Shiouji admits to her that Ropponmatsu II was specifically designed by him for independent studies.

They retreat to his labs lobby. Umi, dressed like a DOA girl Kasumi, gets the two coffee(and seems a little jealous of her cousins company). Shiouji explains that he only cooperates with Kabapu to further his own research and to learn what Kabapu knows about his father. They speak about Kabapus plans as well as the mysterious Il Palazzo. Miwa enters the scene and greets Matsuya quite affectionately.

“There’s something artificial about your mothers… sexuality.”-Matsuya.

The two part and Shiouji invites her to return to talk if she needs too. He says “This may be the only place safe to talk.”

Bonus mission. Fantasy story set in hospital.

Introduction & Part 1

Excel Saga Wikipedia

Hmm… solo Egala pix are so hard to find online.

Volume 10
Mission 1: Excel and Hyatt continue their declaration of conquest. This time visiting a department store. The find it dead inside and rally up the employees in the name of Il Palazzo. The employees remark that their closing because of the recession Japan is in and soon believe Excel and Hyatt are from corporate there to liven their spirits for a big last day sale. They are interrupted when the Daitenzin, a power ranger looking task force of Kabapu(names from Rikdo earlier work) shows up like they(er, Iwata at least) did at the end of volume 9. Iwata takes things to far trying to zap the fleeing Across girls and blowing up the store.

Mission 2: Egala returns to join Excel and Hyatt for lunch. Excel brings her up to date with the campaign as well as the mysterious power ranger-like people who show up to cause them problems. Egala talks about fighting back and mentions she’s good with a sword to the shock of Excel, who pretty much thinks of Egala as useless. Egala also recalls hearing, from Il Palazzo, that Hyatt was an excellent sharpshooter. In a moment of self-doubt Excel exclaims: "See, El and Ha-Chan are your basic military type. One look at their brutal faces tell you they know first hand the ruthless ways of war! I, on the other hand, am more your civilian, secretary of defense type. Planner! All-around player! Big shot!”

Elsewhere Iwata and Watanabe are working on the weekend, get a glimpse of Kabapu’s attempt at having his own uniform like his subordinates, just not of the same style. Ridiculous sci-fi space b-movie villain type.

Back to the main story has all three girls at HQ and Il reprimands Excel for not being aware of her juniors (she is, after all, Senior Excel) skills. Briefly talk about Daiteenzin needing to be eliminated and Il mentions “he” making a mistake, no doubt speaking of Kabapu. Also they comment on Excels attributes like wisdom(?), courage, and great climber(reference to being able to get out of Il’s pits). Yet, Excel doesn’t believe those are her qualities and its easy to see she feels less then adequate in her group.

Mission 3: Excel leaves. This leaves Egala to have to deal with Hyatts accidental attempts at death. First time is a bit shocking , including an assumption that Excel did this as she is yet unaware of her senior leaving, but starts to get the hang of it. Watanabe drops by unannounced at Sumiyoshis and finds a crying young girl with Sumiyoshi. Worst case scenario goes through his head until he finds out that’s Sumiyoshi’s sister , enter Iwata dropping by and the two being shocked at how she looks nothing like her brother. If you’ve seen the pictures I’ve laid, Sumiyoshis the rounder of the three, with the glasses and that unflinching grimace. Here. The trio, Matsuya drops by to return a game, meet the family. The father has more similarities to his daughter then his son but all three speak in the manga the same way-outside balloons or captions. This of course to show partly their regions dialect, that and the way the translators do the wording of their sentences. The mother however looks like Sumiyoshi but speaks in word balloons. Excel returns to the city week later after some training but before she returns home she overhears Egala and Hyatt doing very much fine without her so Excel decides not to return.

Mission 4: Shiouji asks for a picture of Sumiyoshis sister, which scares Sumiyoshi sense he was trying to keep his sister a secret. Especially knowing Shiouji has a fondness for the beauty of young girls. He explains he can monitor from Iwatas head. If you missed earlier summaries, Iwata is now a cyborg. Sumniyoshi agrees before going off to meet Kabapu whose summoned his staff. Excel wanders the streets of Fukuoka trying to regain her confidence. Excel passes by a store where the TV in the window briefly shows a clip of Hyatt. Excel recognizes she’s at the soccer stadium and probably continuing their propaganda attacks, declaring Across the rulers of the city. She talks herself to going to the stadium and helping out. There, she finds Iwata-Ranger attacking Hyatt while Egala was in the control room broadcasting her. Excel shows up in time to rescue Hyatt and once again turns crowd against Iwata(much like mission 5 of volume 9. Iwata blows up the stadium lights and they fall onto him. Iwata’s teammates are not present with him.

Kabapu: Why didn’t the rest of you go into action?

Watanabe: Didn’t you watch what happened?

Matsuya: Have you ever seen the thugs and yobos that go to soccer games?

At Across HQ Il Palazzo praises Excel for showing up when she did-before he reprimands her for absence without leave.

Mission 5: Watanabe celebrates Hyatt(or Ms. Chigusa Ayasugi to him) saying hello to him by his name by inviting Iwata and Sumiyoshi over for drinks. He drops of some sake to Hyatt and her roommates who also get drunk. Excel admits she hasn’t drank sense working construction jobs and Egala mentions she use to work as a waitress at one time. Secretly Egala is trying to get Excel drunk so she can see how she acts, or to watch her collapse. Hyatt handles her alcohol like a pro while Egala starts getting weird, trying to cook Mince and then grabbing on Excel. Eventually Excel passes out with Egala barely staying up as Hyatt just sort of watches. The next morning the three find out most their money is gone.

Bonus Mission: Normally I don’t say anything because they are not cannon(continuity if you will) but it was a fun school story of Excel and Egala done up to pass off as foreign exchange students and set on a bunch of athletic competitions for school because Americans are naturally better athletes(Rikdo’s sarcasm). Funny little story.

Volume 11
Mission 1: In a drunken stupor, Egala went to the apartments ATM and took the money. She denies it but all the clues are there, her shoes awry by the door, security video at the ATM(called apartment owner, call went to Kabapu’s secretary Momochi, and gave description). Eventually Egala, believing at first it was a dream, tells what happened. She took the money and wandered into a restaurant about to close. They gave her a free meal and she left the money accidentally. They thought it was a tip-reopened store and became a chain. So some people had a happily ever after. Remember, this is the big sum Il left them with-around 9 million yen now gone.

Mission 2: Watanabe needs money. Excel is extremely tired as she’s been working every part time job she can get. During a special evaluation Watanabe explains why he’s been so desperate for money. Asking co-workers for loans and selling his(and Sumiyoshis) furniture and appliances. Watanabe explains he’s trying to help his neighbor Upon hearing this, Kabapu is touched and says he’ll help. Deducting money from his checks to payback his help. He then deposits 10 Million yen into Hyatt and companies account to the shock of Watanabe. Hyatt says she’ll try paying him back.

Mission 3: Matsuya and Iwata are trapped in a cave, victims of a harsh blizzard. The two were meant to rendezvous with staff at a certain location but now are stuck together with Matsuya having a broken leg and Iwata slowly losing energy. Matsuya keeps speaking so she can keep from falling onto a deep slumber. She reminisces about their time working together and when the met in college. Iwata eventually loses power and Matsuya starts opening up, knowing his not listening, about how he is generally an okay person. Also talks about trying to make chocolate for him but couldn’t so she bought Pockeys which happened way abck in Volume 5 Mission 2. Iwata and Matsuya are founded out by Shiouji and Ropponmatsu II. When Matsuya comes through she finds out Shiouji heard everything she said-and now she wants him to erase those from his head.

Mission 4: The story of how Egala was working on a fishing ship, got shipwrecked, survived traps and savages to retrieve a buried treasure. Only to come home with the one brick she could take. Excel doesn’t believe her story. Hyatt apparently has a plan to fence said gold. Back at Across HQ Egala is reprimanded.

Mission 5: Watanabe mopes in his home but soon finds some old lotto tickets. Looking to find out if they were winners Ropponmatsu II informs him that one indeed is. He tries redeeming them but transportation and communication problems lead him to despair some more.

Mission 6: Its morning in the across household and as the begin their day it becomes apparent that Egala has gained some weight as she can’t fit into her regular clothes. This leads into the trio discussing possible new uniforms. They talk about the pros and cons of weight, color, mobility and disguise. Discussing masks and helmets Egala has very valid point: “See, the problem with a helmet is that it’s just not cute. Because the most important thing for me… is to look gorgeous!”

They debate dressing in a similar fashion to lord Il palazzo but abandon that notion. They also discuss how their current uniforms were provided to them and wonder about what they do not know about the Across organization.

Mission 7: The Department of Environmental Security is sent out in the heavy rain to rescue a little girl trapped in a car that’s down in the flooded channel. The team send Ropponmatsu I to serve as the rescuer. She retrieves the girl but afterwards gets swept away. The normal rescue team is worried but Ropponmatsus co-workers tell him not to worry and for their team to just go home. During which Iwata is swept away trying foolishly to rescue Roppon(let’s call her One-chan from now on). They decide to leave the retrieval to Prof. Shiouji. As Watanabe says, “Well, it’s like I told you on the way over here, never send a bunch of file clerks to do a mad scientists job.”

Several days later Iwata and Ropponamatsu II(Second-chan) are out and about and run into a building fire. Iwata and Second-chan to the rescue the two waitress’ stuck inside, who incidentally are Excel and Hyatt(keeping the tem million yen in reserve so no future screw ups). Iwata tosses second-chan in to do the job.

Iwata: You see I, or at least certain small, grey bits of me, are a living thing! And life is infinitely precious!

Second-Chan: But, gee, Iwata, it sure looks hot in there.

Iwata: you on the other hand, are a soulless, short skirted, disposable automation!

Second-Chan: Wow! Is this what it means to be human?

Not that their help does anything because excel and Hyatt escape through an air duct and Iwata has to go in and retrieve Second-Chan anyway. Egala returns home to see Hyatt charred, then suddenly up and about shedding the charred remains.

Mission 8: Shiouji objects to how the Ropponmatsu units are being used. Having each body perform a dangerous task that that the other unit is required to do. Kabapu wants him to create a third body that can do both units respective tasks and Shiouji sarcastically writes off Kabapu’s request. At Across HQ Excel tries bringing up Hyatts ability to revive but Il Palazzo disregards the question and inquires about the recent fire at the location Excel and Hyatt were working. He praises her because the building had faulty disaster control and emergency systems. Talks about how steps are being made by other buildings to insure nothing similar happens and how it can save lives in the future. Excel is flustered with a mix of surprise, joy, and validation. Egala wants them to go and do some more arson so she could get a little praise.

Excel: Thinking long term, it may be better for the city if we did in fact raze as many of these structures as possible… After all, these are building we won’t need…

Hyatt: this must be what they call “urban renewal,” Senior.

Egala: Right! Let’s get out there and start leveling!

The arson begins. One building, then a bridge over a channel that’s set off by C4(which excel is confused to hear Egala found at the base). They follow with another building, but Excel and Egala get caught in the explosion as they’re stuck inside setting charges and the timer detonates. They barely survive. Kabapu takes an interest in these attacks, though they were all at locations set for demolition anyway.

Understanding Your Future Masters: Excel Saga Overview Part 4

Table of Contents
Introduction & Part 1
Part 2
Part 3
Excel Saga Wikipedia

Volume 7

Mission 1: In Japan one of the biggest events is the season festivals where the Cherry Blossom trees are in full bloom. Very common to see this in manga and anime and here it is no exception. The department staff (consisting of Kabapu, Momochi, Iwata, Watanabe, Matsuya and Sumiyoshi) goes out to a picnic in the park during such a day. Excel and Hyatt are nearby selling Ramen noodles from a stand they "acquired"(stole). Iwata, from leaving the restroom runs into his cousin Dr. Iwata whose with many beautiful women. He injects his most hated cousin with a syringe of some drug. Back at the picnic Ropponmatsu I is sent out for more food after the staff eat through everything. There Roppon encounters Excel and Hyatt who she remembers from Vol. 6, Missions 6-7. Excel is deeply worried about Roppons survival after the particular explosion (where the cart she was carrying the then unconscious Roppon got lose and crashed into a building). But Roppon takes the food without further questioning of their health, as she remembers Hyatt having died, and leaves. Il Palazzo is in Across HQ monitoring Ropponmatsu. Also, Nurse Fukuya delivers Iwata back to his friends at the end we see that yet again she disciplined Dr. Iwata.

Mission 2: Mince is out on the town. In one scene she passes by an electronics shop where a TV in the sales mirror indicates that minces particular species is actually endangered and some were illegally smuggled into Japan. An award is offered and Mince becomes a target. She eventually gets grabbed by Excel and brought home.

Mission 3: Watanabe, Iwata, and Sumiyoshi are in Watanabe’s apartment eating their food. Sumiyoshi reveals why he never eats at his home: his complex computer system(s). He invites them into his small home where he shows them that he collects dating sims. We also learn that he leans out fighting games to Matsuya whose incredibly good at them. Soon a particular black out crashes his systems, crushing Sumi. Professor Shiouji drops by and explains what caused the power outage. Ropponmatsu’s restart sequence over heated the apartments power supply. He gives Sumiyoshi a new system and says he’ll try to salvage his lost data.

Mission 4: Excel looks to earn a big payday by entering a contest entitled Birdman by the Sea where people make gliders and try to glide as far out into the ocean as possible. The department is hired as staff so Kabapu and the whole group is there (except Ropponmatsu I, who is replaced with her second form). Shiouji’s mutant birdman to open the show gets gunned down by military personnel to the complete lack-of-horror of the audience. Roppon II goes the safety demonstration. Excel enters herself as well as Hyatt and Mince. Excel and Hyatt are wearing some disguises (wigs).

Mission 5: Hyatt out first with a pair of fans, freefalling to her death. Excel resuscitates her and prepares her glider, which eventually gets swept away by the wind. She chases it down before it gets crushed by a train on an abandoned track. Excel then focus’ on Mince with her glider, who goes the distance but because she’s an animal gets disqualified. Excel’s up next, in a quick flashback, the train personnel hand over a top secret experimental glider as a way to calm the then infuriated Excel. Excel flies the glider to victory but leaves with the large noncashable check instead of the real one. Poor girl.

Mission 6: New recruit? Il Palazzo sends Excel and Hyatt to an undisclosed location 9at least to us the reader) in the countryside to identify her. Excels response to this?

A NEW RECRUIT! It’s about increasing the number of personnel! About beefing up our military strength! It’s a policy of economic growth coupled with strong defense! Don’t you get it? Our lord is saying the two of us AREN’T GOOD ENOUGH!

A bit cut from an actual exchange but you get the point. Excel’s paranoia and fear of others becoming Il Palazzos favorite, or becoming more important to Across then herself, worries Excel so much.

The two make it to a countryside resort. They meet the manager a German woman who looks much like a character from Leiji Matsumoto Galaxy Express 999 series. She believes they’ve come to work and knows them as Eh-Chan and Ha-Chan. They meet Mu-Chan, who their intial reaction is that she must be the third member. Excel and Hyatt convince themselves this is a test or training exercise and work hard. Excel mainly, trying to compete with Mu-Chan. “Do you realize that by now I’ve managed to hold down almost a hundred different part-time jobs? How, indeed, can I allow a new recruit to be a better worker then me?” Excel works harder, doing most of Hyatts work, sometimes with her strapped to her back. Mrs. Manager takes Excel and Hyatt to meet the owner who is Mr. Owner from vol. 5, mission 1. He owned the snow resort cabin they briefly worked at.

Mission 7: Turns out Mr. Owner is from Bosnia as he states where he went after the explosion at the cabin. Turns out he sent Excel and Hyatt severance checks afterwards. History repeats it self as, just like that story, excels sent hunting. Yet again, finds Mince instead of game. Continuing déjà vu, Mr. Owner greets Mince and when the two are alone reminisces about the war in his home land and Antonio. In the basement, where Excel and Hyatt are returning the gun they find an old fighter airplane. Mince makes her way down to the basement, tripping the lantern Excel and Hyatt had brought down to illuminate their way. The fire spreads to some explosives and yet again Mr. Owners is destroyed. Hyatt, Excel, and Mince escape on the plane as Mrs. Manager and Mu-Chan return to see the hotel burnt down and Mr. Owner watching. Mu-Chan lost all her worldly possessions in the blaze.

Mission 8: Excel and Hyatt get free from some immigration feds who picked them up after their planed crashed in the ocean. This is after an auto accident resulting in the ambulance crashing trying to rush an intensive care patient (Hyatt) to the hospital. Kabapu gets a call as he over sees that department. He decides to have Momochi cover it up and discharge the current head for mental health reasons. Excel and Hyatt make their way home with excel commenting “Goriest ambulance escape since Silence of the Lambs.” Excel leaves Hyatt to try and find some clothes so they don’t stand out. While away Hyatt runs into Watanabe who helps her home. Also Matsuya finds Mince and returns her as well. After excel comes back, finds Hyatt missing, and looks around for her she returns home to find the pair. Back at HQ Il Palazzo gives excel a pit drop into a relaxing hot spring. Nice guy.

Volume 8
Mission 1: Excel and Hyatt enjoy a nice breakfast while we get a look inside how Hyatt thinks.

“Senior Excel is full of energy this morning. This omelet is yellow. My chopsticks are in my left hand and my rice bowl is in my right hand. One of our table legs is shorter than the others. It clatters as the table wobbles. I think this is cute. Oh, how wonderful today’s pickled plums taste. This makes me happy.”

Watanabe continues giving Hyatt free things in attempts to talk to her and get her to really notice him. Il Palazzo announces he’ll be gone for 48 hours. The two have a part time job at an electronics store as it works with Il Palazzos instructions on information economy. The team slogan is “don’t work to hard” or “sale to the person who looks loaded.” Hyatt’s impression of job translates to: “This job demonstrates how information gets blocked mid-way, and fails to reach those waiting at the end of the system.” In the end of today’s mission we hear more of Hyatts thoughts including her admiration for how reliable and hard working excel is and how she wishes she had the same kind of energy. Very fond of her senior.

Mission 2: Excel and Hyatt rush to HQ as Excel believes they are being followed. There they encounter Mu-Chan, who is indeed the new recruit. Her alias is Kasumi Munakata and her Across name is Egala. Unlike Il, Excel, and Hyatt Egala is named after a shopping center in the city of Fukuoka, where they are in fact trying to conquer first. Excel seems distraught by this but greets her. Turns out all three landed at the wrong meeting location but still met up. Back in vol. 7 mission 6-7. Excel’s hyperactive, Hyatts dies, so what is Egala’s recognizable trait? She speaks out her inner dialogue. She also becomes Excels pit buddy, though Egala has a harder time dealing with it then Excel does. Egala looks to be moving in soon with excel and Hyatt while Il, alone, uses his holo-computer and mentions how he has no memory of who he once was but knows his ultimate goal.

Mission 3: Excel awakens confused, seeing Egala nowhere and chalking it up to a bad dream. That is until HQ where they are reunited again to a mystified Excel. “Why is senior Excel staring at me like that? She’s making me very uneasy as I, Egala, do not swing that way.” Il gave Egala a separate task wand will occasionally do so without informing Excel or Hyatt about it or the details. Egala follows them to their home, meets Mince, and easily annoys Excel. Now the three have to adjust to living together in a small apartment. More of a loft really…

Mission 4: Iwata’s physical results come in and reveals he has cancer. Kabapu and Momochi are overheard talking about it as some of the workers over hear. Watanabe, Sumiyoshi, and Matsuya don’t tell him, as ordered) and work to be extremely nice to him. All the while Excel, Hyatt, and Egala are working at Rikidonalds. Excel comments on Egalas materialistic lifestyle and Egala doesn’t agree as Excel is extremely frugal in her spending. Watanabe, while talking to Iwata about his family, tells him that he has cancer and Iwata confronts the doctor who verifies that his physical came in. That he had colon cancer, as well as several different forms of cancer. Turns out his cousin, Dr. Iwata, wrote up the report so they disregard it.

Mission 5: IWATA IS DEAD! Turns out he did have colon cancer and the rest of the report was just his cousin jazzing it up. Egala goes out walking Mince to the wrath of excel who doesn’t want Mince to be lean, because she is the emergency food ration. At the job Watanabe, Sumiyoshi, Matsuya, and Ropponmatsu II find that Dr. Shiouji has put Iwatas brain into Ropponmatsus body, keeping him alive.

“Oh no, Iwata is definitely dead, in every legal sense. He is, however, survived by Iwata Mark II, whom, as you see, will greatly contribute to the tactical strength of this department,” Kabapu.

“FOR GOD’S SAKE, DOCTOR, IWATA MAY BE AN IDIOT BUT WHAT ABOUT HIS HUMAN RIGHTS?” Watanabe.

“He was fully entitled to them until yesterday. This is all covered on page 3476 of the employee handbook, you know.” Kabapu.

Mission 6: The operatives are greeted by Il Palazzo with funds of 10 Million yen for living expenses. As well as health insurance cards with alias. Excel is allowed to choose between three names, one of which included what could be her last name Klienwald. They attempted to withdraw money but because none had a bank seal or an ATM password they can’t. After fixing things with Il Palazzo they return home to find Mince fleeing the fire which has now engulfed their home.

Mission 7: Excel, Hyatt, Egala, and Mince are all in a cardboard box plotting what to do now that their home has been burnt down. This also marks the first Egala witness’ Hyatt’s death and is mortified by Excels reaction to it. Kabapu is on top of the situation offering his workers new homes in an apartment building. Obviously, some of his employees are suspicious and Matsuya asks him blatantly if he burnt down their homes. Turns out Iwata was the cause. After his employees leave Kabapu admits he had the apartment complex as investment property that was vacant. He also learns there was one other person living there though he had the apartment complex swept out. Seems excel found a way to wiggle out of being kicked out my marking the tenant, Hyatt to be precise, as dead. They decide to find her and put her under surveillance(!). The trio are camping out to no avail as they anger local wildlife and flee back to the city. Out in the park Hyatt is found by one of Kabapu’s workers and given keys and directions to her new home.

Mission 8: Flashback to how Iwata burnt down the apartments. Iwata was still adjusting to his temporary Ropponmatsu I body and accidentally tripped some machinery in “her” home setting off the fire. Got knocked out and the back up kicked in, operating the body while Iwata was unconscious. This leads to Roppon 2 trying to stop “her.”Turns out Kabapu was arranging for his employees to be moved out anyway, so he can monitor them better.

Volume 9
Opens with bonus mission, fantasy episode. I’m only doing the real story so I’m skipping this.

Mission 1: Excel and companions are amazed by their new home. Excel still believes in being frugal and wants to apply the same rules of their old home to this household, much to Egala’s dismay. They soon discover the others have moved in to. There’s also a brief segment where, after going to get some food, Excel loses the keys and they’re returned by Roppon II. There is one scene of serious note where Kabapu mentions to momochi of a friend he had a fallen out with, referencing Il Palazzo.

Mission 2: Egala is absent and Hyatt sicker then usual leaving Il Palazzo to take her to Across HQ Medical wing. This leaves excel alone for the day, for the first time in a while She wanders around bored while Egala is out infiltrating the Department of Environmental Security. Back at the apartments Sumiyoshi and Watanabe discuss a weird shed near their homes. Later in the same story Kabapu and Momochi are discussing it being listed for demolition. It was where research, unsuccessful, was taking place. They lost 9 Billion yen on it.

There is a scene where Hyatt is in a weird chamber, floating in water and Il watches in commenting that a genetic substrate implanted in her was flawed which lead to deterioration of Hyatt. Towards the end Hyatts rejuvenate to greet Excel, for a few seconds before yet again collapsing.

Mission 3: Very simple story with Watanabe, Sumiyoshi, and Matsuya all wondering about how Iwata is going to turn out as Prof. Shiouji is apparently still working on him. They ask Roppon II for some clues but doesn’t give any.

Mission 4: Several stories ago, Vol. 4 Mission 6, excel had a brief case of amnesia and though it worked out fine, the incident left Mince with a bump that caused her amnesia. Well, she’s bumped her head against the wall and has been stricken with painful memories of Excel and Hyatt. Knowing, that yet again, her purpose is as abck up food supply. Attempts escape only to run into Egala who Micne’s come to like. Upon Excel and Hyatt’s return home they find Mince hiding behind Egala in hear, confused on Minces recent attitude change.

Mission 5: This is a long one so bear with me.

“When this world ended in the past… It chose a new path. What happened to that path? Of those forces that are intervening… I would ask this question one more time. I would ask this world a question.”-Il Palazzo

Il Palazzo signifies it’s time for a declaration of conquest to the city. So Excel and Hyatt plot and plan as Egala decides not to join their scheme. While the members of the dept. are still awaiting the return of Iwata, soon to be android/cyborg. They flashback to Kabapu’s statements on him no longer being human and how, outside the office, he should be addressed as Mr. Mitsukoshi. Watanabe worries this will be all their fates. On their ay back to the office from lunch they past by Excel and Hyatt, both in their uniforms and wearing shades, Watanbe thinks he recognizes Hyatt in the crowd that the two are addressing but isn’t so sure and leaves. While they’re making their declaration the large crowd, are either ignoring them and moving on or are mildly interested. Somehow, up in his near by office Kabapu goes into some weird spasm.

“Across… Il Palazzo… I remember it… now!”-Kabapu

Kabapu escapes through a secret sci-fi corridor behind his desk leaving Momochi to carry out the PLAN (manual marked, left on the desk he flees) and cancel all his appointments for the day. While making his way through his weird corridor contacts Shiouji. A copter soon appears over the area and launches a coffin at the girls. Almost takes out excel but she’s too good to be done in by a projectile coffin. The crowd now invested, pay attention thinking they’re on TV. Excel switches costumes, as hers gets torn, to Egala’s, to continue their declaration. The coffin pops open and a power rangers like character emerges. “A FIGHTER FOR JUSTICE… HAS ARRIVED!”

Back in the offices Watanabe, Sumiyoshi, and get dropped from their office into a secret slide into a weird futuristic room wearing the outfits from Vol. 2 Mission 5, the skintight future wear. Kabapu points them to a monitor where the battles taking place. Out in the streets Excel battles the Justice Ranger. His laser gun has no effect on her as it hits her in the chest area, but when he tries it on himself there is a huge explosion. Excel turns the crowd, still thinking its television, against the masked ranger after he destroys public property testing the gun, and then accidentally shoots a neighboring building. The ranger reveals himself to by Iwata, whose calling for the doctors help. Kabapu, embarrassed, contacts Shiouji to retrieves Iwata and Momochi to create a cover up story. Excel and Hyatt return to HQ to speak to Il Palazzo about their encounter.

Table of Contents
Wikipedia Entry
Introduction & Part 1

Volume 3
Mission 1: Quick summary of Across' goal to take over the city as the first step to world conquest. Plus reviewing the fact Excel and Hyatt have to support themselves with part-time jobs during a recession and are generally poor.

This story they take temp jobs on a mayoral campaign and also to gather information on the possible new mayor as well as the voting system in Fukoaka. It turns out that the mayors campaign team had plan to release a last minute voters kit to certain areas but had to be redone when damaging information on the prime minister, who the mayoral candidate had inserted a picture of the prime minister and himself shaking hands into the voters kit, had to be removed. The prime minister had just gotten caught up in some sort of scandal. We also learn here that Excel and Hyatt really know nothing about whose running the country or any of the major players in Japanese politics. The two get paid, plus a bribe to vote. We also learn this potential mayor is in the pocket of our Dr. Kabapu.

Mission 2: During the opening Il Palazzo speech we witness again Il Palazzos weird memory lapses as he forgets the job titles he assigned his subordinates. Excel and Hyatt take jobs giving away prizes in order to give away free phones and make people sign contracts. Ties into Il Palazzo's speech on information exchange. Excel, in her mind, equates orientation and boss' to minions of Satan.

Mission Statement: THE FATE IF YOUR SOUL DEPENDS ON HOW MANY CONTRACTS YOU GET THEM TO SIGN!

Boss: Yebo ruoy retsam! Retsam!

Does everyone have a cell? Iwata feels excluded from his co-workers(Watanabe and Sumiyoshi) so he goes to the giveaway to get one. Even trades a free VCR(a high prize) to get one. Poor Watanabe buys a second one because Mrs. Ayasugi's(alias Hyatt) selling.

Mission 3: Health care concerns? Il sends his subordinates undercover to gather information. We once again meet Dr. Iwata and nurse Fukuya. Dr. Iwata, of course, turns out to be taking bribes to push a new set of pills from a pharmaceutical company. Excel and Hyatt blend in easy, so much their sent out on jobs. Hyatt shows an aptitude for the job, which no doubt has something to do with her many deaths.

Misaka Matsuya takes (Norikuni)Iwata to the hospital where we finally see the good doctor and his cousin face to face. This is also where we find out how Dr. Iwata got his facial scars(damn google can't find me a pic) as his cousin slashed him with surgical tools while he slept. He holds a grudge, obviously. Iwata was injured by Matsuya after he offended her. The doctor uses a syringe with some drug to put his cousin to sleep. This is before Dr. Iwata explains his hate and how he wants to enact a gruesome revenge. The nurse puts Dr. Iwata down and Misaki eventually just leaves Iwata out in the gutter.

Hyatt and Excel are spotted by the nurse, who recognizes them from volume 1: mission 7. Tells them to just leave. Quickly they get separated and Excel looks for Hyatt who goes missing, when she ended up dead in the morgue.

Mission 4: Everyone has various dream sequences. The end. Oh, except the final pages where we have Il Palazzo and Kabapu standing around plotting against one another because somehow they know each other exists to oppose the other.

Mission 5: Snow day. The civil servants are off from work and as they plan to go out, the run into Mrs. Ayasugi/Hyatt(after she awakens from death while Excels out). She joins them. Some violence between Iwata and Watanabe(of course). Iwata then ticks off Matsuya with a snowball, she responds in kind knocking him out. Hyatt offers some of her pills which puts Iwata back onto his feet, briefly, before becoming sick. Matsuya recommends a "special" hospital where Iwata's cousin works.

Mission 6: Security breach at Across HQ has Excel and Hyatt responding with extreme measures. Except the control room to protect Across is analog. Filled with levers, pulleys, and voice tubes. No buttons, switches, or even monitor screens. As they plan to fend of the intruders we learn Iwata, Sumiyoshi, Watanabe, and Matsuya weren't sent down by Kabapu to explroe any suspicious activities. The group elect Iwata as leader to hold the new version of the laser gun appearing back in volume 2. This allows them to stand behind him and possibly out of harms way. They get that with a dropping wall blocking the path back and a sudden flood of the sewers. Excel and Hyatt get caught into it as well as their defense room is not the most well constructed. Before the flood and after the cage wall, the voice tubes carry the intruders voices up to their location where Excel remarks their voices where familiar somehow.

Mission 7: Il Palazzo has a screen to view the chaos. The servants get separated with Matsuya ending up with Iwata. Watanabe awakens with Hyatt and is confused. Excel appears with a jump kick to the head, knocking him out and retrieving her partner. Matsuya and Iwata find Sumiyoshi and then Watanabe whose collapses. He explains what happened. Sumi comments on it as a dream.

"Me guess is that dream wuz a reflection o' how ye hev th' secret desire t' abduct lasses ye are attracted to, an' then lock them away in spots like these, an' then toy wi' them, an' kill them"

Il watches as Excel opens a secret room, and is surprised. Then he blows out a door and floods the sewer. Matsuya looks up, annoyed, as if she knows she's being monitored.

Volume 4
Mission 1: The opening scene alludes to Il Palazzo communicating with someone in his dreams. He also seems to have forgotten the recent intrusion. At the department Matsuya lies, for the team, about their recent encounter. Also Iwata takes the blame for losing the fun(which turns out to be a non functioning replica and Kabapu had the working model, but didn't notice). Iwata's punishment is to frog hop the buildings stairway, Kabapu makes this punishment expecting his co-workers to stand up for him, but they don't.

Matsuya explains to Sumiyoshi and Watanabe that giving Kabapu the truth would send them back down in the sewer and they don't get paid enough for the dangerous work. Back in Hyatt and Excels home, Mince is using a gardening tool to pick away at the wall in secret, hoping to escape.

Mission 2: In Japan you can pay bills at the post office so Hyatt spends a little of their money to handle this while Excel looks to get some groceries. However Hyatt gets kidnapped on her way by a pair of bank robbers. They take her to their hidden cabin but Hyatt does well to use a bottle of pills to leave a trail for Excel to follow. The trail then becomes a bunch of dead birds. In the cabin, Hyatt's naive and questioning nature upsets one of the robbers who accidentally knocks her, while tied to a chair, over and killing her. They set the cabin on fire as Excel arrives, she rushes in to save her but Hyatt already escaped. the two try hitching a ride back home, where the robbers driving away spot them and fly off the side of the highway into the country side.

Mission 3: Tooth decay strikes Excel! Goes to the dental clinic which is connected with the hospital and Dr. Iwata is filling in that day. Nurse Fukuya tries supervising him as he wants to operate on the tooth by pulling it out. In an attempt to escape excel knocks out the tooth herself, before the Nurse strikes down Dr. Iwata.

"It was a baby tooth, right!?"-Doc.
"If you don't explain your actions to me, I have no choice but to assume the worst."-Nurse

Mission 4 : Introducing new supporting character Secretary Momochi, assistant to Dr. Kabapu. This story here is a spotlight on him. The two talk about the selection for the fifth member who died the night before, meaning they'll have to find someone else to fill the spot with the civil servants/employees. The new mayor drops by and Matsuya ponders to herself why would he come out to visit Kabapu instead of the other way around. The guys follow Kabapu and Momochi to a sushi bar where Iwata(with the thumbs up from the other two) spikes Kabapu's wasabi for a joke. As Matsuya is dropping off a report she finds a folder of pictures on Kabapu's desk from the training seminar as well as an old black and white picture from the doctor. Later she finds the location of the picture and notes how there is now a skyscraper behind the building the shot was taken in front of. Iwata, Sumiyoshi, and Watanabe get stuck with double the workload because of the practical joke.

Mission 5: Local newspaper gives out free tickets to the pool. Excel and Hyatt work out a way to claim it as an observation operation for Across. Excels gear is from a life guarding job, though the style is indicative, In Japan, of a school swim gear. Hyatt(as Mrs. Ayasugi) and Watanabe run in to one another. They talk briefly until a sip of Hyatts drink sparks a severe sickness in him where he has to be rushed to the hospital. Poor guy.

Mission 6: Excel coats over the wall where Mince was digging, crushing his fragile dreams. While walking down the street she gets hit. Hyatt passes out from the sight while Excel ends up in a public restroom with amnesia. She heads to the hospital and occasionally gets flashes of memory and in one moment finds herself crying uncontrollably. On a side note, Sumi and Iwata are on their way to the hospital when they run into Mrs. Ayasugi who declines to tag along as she searches for Excel.

Mission 7: Excel continues having flashes. She bumps into Kabapu for a moment. nothing important in that scene, but thought it's worth a note. Hyatt and Mince find her, however Hyatt collapses/dies and and Excel tries chasing the dog knowing that they know who she is. Upon her chase she falls into the channel and her memories come back, yet block out the period of time she went amnesiac. Though Mince is acting unusal after she was chased into the river by Excel.

Mission 8: Watanabe leaves the hospital early and returns to work searching for Iwata. Iwata vandalized him as he slept with permanent marker. Iwata takes off on vactaion but Watanabe finds him and beats him down. Both end up in hospital. Matsuya remarks: I suppose it was a fitting match up. One still recovering from near-fatal poisoning, the other a complete coward."

Il Palazzo envisions some door, and speaks with Hyatt and Excel about Excels recent amnesiac episode.

I actualy have notes done for volumes 5-6 but I'm tired. Peace out.
